Question
Hi my name is Cheyenne and I'm doing a report on career's for a girl scout badge. the career I choose is a police detective. I have several question's. 1) What types of thing's does someone in this position do? 2) What are some of the working conditions? 3)What would be a related field?4)Is this a common job for a women? 5)What is the salary range?

Answer
Cheynne,
Glad to help.
1) what types of things do we do ?
very broad answer, when i describe my duties i usually state the I supervise and conduct criminal investigations in my area and as assigned.  Pretty bland.  Detectives are specialized investigators in a police agency.  They can generalize and do all types of investigations or they can specialize, everything from theft, homicide, fraud, sex crimes, etc.

2) the working conditions vary but are basically the same as any other police office, inclement weather, hazardous environments, office, etc.  Pretty much anywhere and everywhere.

3) Related fields,  Investigations, auditing, risk management, loss prevention, insurance, security, etc.

4) There are more and more women doing this type of work now.  The job has become much more intellect over physical in the last 20-30 years.  They do an awesome job.

5)  Salary range varies by agency and rank, 30-80 thousand is a pretty good range.

This is all pretty basic, feel free to post a follow up,

Good luck
