Subject: My freind stole a signed blank check from my desk.

Question
I had a signed blank check in my desk.  My friend who lived with me took the signed check wrote it out for $100,000, which I had in my checking account and skipped town.  I called the police but all they said was how was I going to prove that she stole the check.  Hmmm....Lets see.....  It was for $100,000.  Who writes their roommate a personal check for $100,000.  What do I do?  She took off with some furniture, paitings, my two dogs, and wiped out my account.  Did she commit a crime I can charge her with?

Answer
Diana,

My answer would have to be yes.  The taking of the check and making it out for 100,000 is forgery under any state law i have ever heard of.  How do you prove she took the check ?  She probably signed the check,  I am sure the bank took ID.  Are you also alleging that she signed your name to the check ?  If so the bank may have some liability for cashing a check you didn't sign. Banks don't get 100K checks everyday drawn on personal accounts.  The furniture, painting etc are kind of minor when looking at 100K. You need to contact someone from the Detective unit at your police department.  Set up an appointment and go meet with them.  IF that gets no where contact the county prosecutor and meet with them.  You need to do this now before it gets any older.

Good luck

Robin
