Question
Our adult neighbor has been verbally harassing my minor son and daughter when ever they are outside.  I have been ignoring it for about three years, hoping she would get tired of it, but it has continued and has escalated into threats and slander.  She has been calling my son a child molester along with many other disgusting names. I have fear because she is an alcoholic and has shown me her gun, and threatened my son and his friend with a baseball bat.  Is there anything I can do legally to protect my family?  It is mostly directed towards my son who is now 15.

Answer
Laura,

Neighbor problems are some of the most difficult to deal with.  You have been dealing with this for 3 years and it has been escalating. Since it has been going on for three years you need to start building a case.  Begin a log of contacts and actions.  Use audio recordings if you can, video is great too.  If she is threatening the use of weapons etc and she has access to them you need to get on this right away.  If she ever produces a weapons and display it contact the police right away.  Once you have some information and evidence contact the police and make a report.  You by this time should have more then enough background and facts to obtain a protection order. Each state's requirements are somewhat different.

Good luck

Robin
