Criminal Law/repurcutions from an outstanding warrant?
Expert: Robin Sexton - 7/31/2009
QuestionI was recently cleaning my apartment and found an old ticket (description of offense: poss open cont of alchohol) and now am concerned I may have an outstanding warrant, though I have never received anything related to this offense in the mail.
First, what is the best way to find out if I do in fact have a warrant?
And if I do have one, what repurcutions can I expect when I go to take care of this at the courthouse? I can aford to pay any penalty + interest, but don't wish to spend any time in jail. This is in New York City.
Additionally I didn't sign the acknowledgment of receipt at the bottom of the summons.
Also, if I were to go to the DMV to get a new driver's license, would they deny me if I were to have an outstanding warrant?
Thank you!
AnswerStephen,
It is possible there could be a warrant for you. You can try calling the court to see if they will acknowledge the warrant but truthfully i doubt you will get through or that they will tell you.
You can also go down to the court ( call first for correct times and place) and get it handled that way. It is unlikely that if you went down to the court to take care of the ticket that they would arrest you. Actually the best ideas are if you have a acquaintance who is a cop ask them. If not call your local precinct and ask, they wont trace your call and come get you.
If there is a warrant your license can be suspended depending on your states law. Last idea is contact an attorney to make some checks for you.
Hope this helped
