Question
QUESTION: I'm not sure if you can help with this or not but perhaps you can point me in the right direction.  I began working for an employer about a year ago up front he agreed to a few things for example my pay rate and that I would have free phone service as this was a cellular provider.  When my first pay period came around the employer said he would not be able to pay me what we originally discussed to make a long story short I worked for this person 90 hours a week for a year for what eventually amounted to only about $2.00 an hour and never did get phone service other than me paying for my own.  I recently applied to a similar job and was hired obviously at a much much higher pay rate and benefits and when they called my previous employer he  gave a bad untrue reference.  Is there anything i can do in this matter perhaps sue for monies owed or even in criminal court considering the pay rate was so low?

ANSWER: Ken,

This is a civil matter that you can take to your local magisterial or small claims court to recoup the monies you worked for but never received.  You can also report your former employer to your state attorney general's office for unethical hiring practices.

Ken,

Find the address by looking on the Internet.  Many states have a complaint form you can fill out online instead of writing one and mailing it.  Just do a search for your state's AG office and it will come up.  In the event your state does not have an online form go ahead and write a traditional letter explaining everything you have here.
