Question
Hello, it was about 8 years ago(April 2001) that I was found with a fake social security card in my possession, I used it in order to get a job, the federals found out about it. I never went to trial, I never served no time, I got 2 years probation; now I'm planning on studying criminal justice, my question is if after finishing my studies, could I work for the government?, prisons, correction facilities, federal agencies, etc?, Thanks!

Answer
Fernando,

I am sorry to tell you this but it is going to be difficult.  You will need to try and get the record expunged. If this is a Federal charge that is going to be difficult.  Felony convictions are normally the kiss of death when it comes to law enforcement employment.  Most agencies do a detailed back ground check and since they are law enforcement they have access to suppressed records so suppressed records would be discovered.  Now some agencies will over look criminal convictions such as some correctional agencies.  Most law enforcement specific agencies, FBI, DES, State Police, etc will probably not hire with a felony conviction.  Other more regulatory or less law enforcement centered agencies will.
Best advice is to first get a copy of your state and federal arrest record, make sure what is exactly on it.  If it is a felony check with an attorney as to the viability of attempting to obtain and expungement.  Then check the specific agency you would consider working for and  their requirements.

Good luck
