Criminology and Forensic Psychology/Psy.D. in Criminology

Question
I received a dual undergrad degree in Psychology and Criminology.  I received my Master's degree in Psychology with a specialization in forensic psychology.  I would like to get into a Psy.D. program.  I have worked at correctional institutions, hospitals, etc.  I have the grades and experience, but my GRE's are not in the top 20 percent.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Vicky, most of the private schools will accept you, with pretty much any GRE score (I suppose as long as they are not TOO bad!). The schools are expensive, of course. If you want to raise your GRE score, I suggest using old / practice SAT scores to practice with. Take them over and over until you have almost memorized the answers. You can purchase both new and out of print - I suggest doing both. As far as the analogies test, I suggest taking a logic course, or at least practicing the kinds of questions that will be on the test.

Expertise

Any questions in the area of Forensic Psychology. I am not a criminologist nor an FBI Behavioral Analyst. "WHY" questions are particularly difficult to answer scientifically (i.e., why do people commit crimes?).

Experience

I have been doing forensic psychology for 15+ years, both evaluations, and treatment. I have particularly focused on disability evaluations and criminal competency.

I donate some of my time and expertise to the less fortunate, thru legal aid services. In 1999, I received an award from the Palm Beach County Legal Aid Society, for the work I've done for them.
