Critics of Catholicism/Catholic vs Pentecostal beliefs
Expert: Marvin Howard - 3/2/2008
QuestionDear Dr Howard, I am looking for a few easy-to-read points to illustrate the differences between the original Christian (today called Pentecostal or Full Gospel) beliefs and what the Roman Catholic Church proclaims. I come from a Catholic background, but recently became a Christian and would like to explain the differences to my family (who is Italian and Catholic). Thank you for your help

AnswerHi!
Gloria, thank you for coming to me for an answer to this question. Though the church was born on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ, what exists today as the religion of pentecostalism, bears little resemblance to the first century church, nor does it present the full gospel as it claims. The original does still exist today. You are right that catholicism is not the original either. Therefore, there are three religions I must compare and contrast for you that you may have a full answer. Let us begin by comparing catholicism with Christ’s church.
With His death fast approaching, Christ was praying fervently. To get an idea of the emotion felt by our Savior, consider His final prayer in Gethsemane. He was sweating so profusely that His drops of sweat were recorded as being extremely large; falling as it were in drops the size of blood. With this in mind, let’s look at one of the final prayers of Jesus; recorded in the 17th chapter of John. To get a timeline, the last half of the book of John was written regarding the last week in the life of Christ. Take special notice of the theme of this prayer. Ask yourself, “What was it that Jesus wanted?”
John 17:1-26, “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. AND THIS IS LIFE ETERNAL, THAT THEY MIGHT KNOW THEE THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that ALL THINGS whatsoever thou hast given me ARE OF THEE. For I have GIVEN UNTO THEM THE WORDS which thou gavest me; and THEY HAVE RECEIVED THEM, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, KEEP THROUGH THINE OWN NAME THOSE WHOM THOU HAST GIVEN ME, that THEY MAY BE ONE, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I HAVE GIVEN THEM THY WORD; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that THEY ALSO MAY BE ONE IN US: that THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE THAT THOU HAST SENT ME. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; THAT THEY MAY BE ONE, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (Emphasis in caps mine, MRH)
Christ was going to be crucified. Christ was going to have very little time with His disciples from this point to His ascension. Jesus prayed for unity amongst His followers; several times in this prayer. If it was not something that was possible, then Jesus was just wasting His breath. Unity is possible. Unity should be the goal of Jesus’ religion (the true and correct religion). However, let us look at this logically.
In religion, we are given some statements that would be outlandish in the normal world. These statements are religious truth. The world denies them, but this does not change their veracity. We can have no proof of these statements. They must be accepted on faith; not by sight. In other words, they are to be accepted simply because Christ, or those acting on His authority, said so.
Whether you agree or disagree with a particular statement is not important to this exercise. I am going to make some statements with which no one should agree. Nothing is meant or intended to be read into any of these statements. There is a point to this, and I will explain further in a moment. Consider each of the following:
• The sky is always green.
• The musk of a skunk does not stink.
• All cars are equally safe and equally powerful.
• No one dies.
• The heavenly bodies are gods.
Let us say this list is a complete set of religious tenets; all given by the founder of one religion. Let’s say a person believes and acts upon all these statements. Such a person is a follower of the founder. Such a person is in unity with all others that believe and practice the same. Combined, all such people (including the founder) constitute one religion.
Obviously, a person who believes none of these tenets does not share a religion with the founder. Seeing the difference is easy. This is understandable by all.
Now, let’s suppose that one person does not agree that the sky is always green. This person may believe the other tenets of the religion, but on this point vehement denial is given. Would this person share a religion with the founder of the one in our exercise? Actually, the person who disbelieves this tenet starts his own religion, based only on the last, four tenets listed. He is now the founder of a new religion. All others who only follow the last four are in this different religion, but it is not the original. It is an imposter. It bears similarity to the first religion, as it shares four common tenets of belief. If a person came along that had never heard of the first tenet, he would be hard pressed to find a difference. He would likely think both religions were the same.
Now, let’s suppose that instead of disbelieving the first tenet, another person comes along and replaces it with another. Let’s say this person believes the earth is always blue. Now we have the original religion, one based on only four tenets, and one based on five (even though they are the wrong five). This new religion is also an imposter. There are three religions, with three founders; and all share common traits. The uneducated (or the uninitiated) cannot tell the difference.
You can easily see how this would multiply exponentially as each tenet gets changed or eliminated by someone. This is true of an example with only five tenets. Even more confusion arises when myriad other tenets are introduced out of thin air rather than substituted. Now, imagine the complexity when you think of all the tenets laid forth in Scripture. This is the method of origin for all the different denominations. It is reported that there are over 4,000 different denominations in the world. Each is its own religion. Each one shares some points in common with the original; some more than others. All denominations are able to successfully masquerade as the original, as all share at least one tenet in common with another.
This gets even more complicated when the change of a tenet is not so obvious. Let’s say that someone declares, “The skies are always green.” Now, instead of one sky being green, there is supposedly a plurality. The first sky is still green. The change is partial truth. However, a half truth is a full lie.
Now that total confusion is proven to reign, let us get to the point of this exercise. Christ prayed for unity. There is only one way His desire can be fulfilled. Unity must be based on what is written (or said) in the revealed Word of God. Once another idea is introduced (e.g., the sky is not always green, or the earth is always blue), unity no longer exists. This happens because the founder of the religion DID reveal that the sky is always green, DID NOT reveal that the earth is always blue, and DID NOT reveal that there is more than one sky.
The first tenet of belief on which there can be unity is found within Christ’s prayer for unity. That is unifying upon a name. Since unity can only be achieved by basing belief upon the Bible, let us look at what the Bible says about our religious name.
Firstly, as individuals, Isaiah 62:2 promises a new name would be given to followers of God when Gentiles became an accepted people. This name would be named by the mouth of God. It is not open for man to change. When Cornelius was accepted into the church, we see the beginning of this fulfillment in Acts 10. Just one chapter later, we find a full congregation of Gentiles in Antioch. As soon as this is the case, inspiration reveals that, “the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26).
You should know that members of the church are called:
• Members of Christ 1st Corinthians 12:27, 6:15, Romans 12:4-5
• Disciples of Christ Acts 6:1-7, 11:26
• Believers Acts 5:14; 2nd Corinthians 6:15
• Saints Acts 9:13, Romans 1:7, Philippians 1:1
• Priests 1st Peter 2:5-9; Revelation 1:6
• Children of God Galatians 3:26-27, 1st John 3:1-2
• Christians Acts 11:26, 26:28, 1st Peter 4:16
You should know that in Bible times, the church is called:
• The temple of God 1st Corinthians 3:16
• The bride of Christ Ephesians 5:22-32
• The body of Christ Colossians 1:18-24, Ephesians 1:22-23
• The kingdom of God’s son Colossians 1:13
• The house of God 1st Timothy 3:15
• The church of God 1st Corinthians 1:2
• The church of the first-born Hebrews 12:23
• The church of the Lord Acts 20:28
• The churches of Christ Romans 16:16
Remember, this is but one tenet, but it is a tenet according to the prayer of Jesus. There may be imposters that use any of these, but are wrong in other things. However, in any case, when these are altered, it should be obvious we are dealing with an imposter. Individuals in the Bible are nowhere called baptists, methodists, episcopalians, catholics, and the list goes on, ad infinitum. Likewise, the church is not called baptist, methodist, episcopalian, catholic, and the list goes on just as did the first. People who make this alteration are imposters. They are not Christians.
Opponents of catholicism often make a statement to the effect, “It is not mentioned in Scripture.” Such is not entirely the case. The religion of catholicism may not be approved in the Bible, but it is mentioned by practice, even if not by name. The first case of this mention is related specifically to Christ’s prayer for unity.
1st Corinthians 1:10-13, “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?”
Cephas is the Aramaic version of the name of Peter. Just as catholicism claims to follow Peter today, claiming the pope is his successor, they did so then. Peter was never a pope. A pope, being a priest, is forbidden to marry. Nevertheless, Peter had a wife (Matthew 8:14). There is much more stated against this false religion in prophecy. I will not go into every false doctrine in detail, but this one more will show you God’s attitude towards catholics; declaring what He calls them.
1st Timothy 4:1-5, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”
Some would depart from the faith. Once faith is left, those involved no longer have it. This leaving of the faith would be accomplished by forbidding people to marry. The catholic religion forbids priests and nuns from marrying. Moreover, this departure would be confirmed by this group forbidding people to eat meat. The catholic religion forbids (or at least forbade) people to eat meat on Fridays. So, look further into this. These prohibitions are said to be doctrines or teachings. Who is said to teach these things? These are the teachings of devils. They are not the teachings of Christians. Whoever teaches these are devils. Therefore, catholics are not Christians, but the very opposite of Christians; devils.
Now let us turn our attention to the group that claims to be just like the Christians at Pentecost. The pentecostal religion claims to do the same miracles as were done at the birth of the church. This is an untruth. Not one in this group will reattach a severed hand. Not one in this group will go to a cemetery to raise the dead. Even those that try to drink poison or handle snakes suffer consequences. Many die, but even the survivors are made ill. The miracle was that there would be no ill effects (Mark 16:18).
A claim is made that some healing is done. The whole purpose of any New Testament miracle was to serve as proof that what was said was truth. Miracles were always used to confirm a new revelation from God. Look at it critically. Every supposed healing today is of a condition not visible. The audience is carefully screened. The only people accepted for a healing are those hand-picked by the supposed healer. Joe Stranger from off the street can never get into the line.
The body has some amazing abilities. I am sure you heard of the practice of giving placebos. When the body thinks it is going to be healed, it often heals itself. However, this often takes a while to accomplish. Such is the case with the “faith healers” and their “miracles.” Men have been told they were healed of blindness, but that the healing may take a while. I have seen this “while” turn into 20 years, and the man promised sight die blind. All miraculous healing was immediate. There is not one recorded instance of a miracle where it took longer than one hour to accomplish.
When a “healing” fails, a claim is made that the fault lies in the faith of the one being healed; that it was not sufficient. The problem with this is that miracles were often performed in the first century even with a total lack of faith on the part of the recipient. In Cana, the recipients of the wine made from water had no idea who Jesus was in the religious sense. Lazarus was dead at his resurrection and could have no faith; likewise with Eutychus and Dorcas.
A claim is made that speaking in tongues still exists today as it did in the early church. Again, speaking in tongues is miraculous, and every action so labeled should be examined critically. When tongue speaking happened in the first century, what was it? Look at Acts 2. The Apostles spoke. Others understood, even though the speaking was not in the native tongue of the Apostles. Why? The language used was the native tongue of the hearer.
Often an objection is raised to this by pentecostals. “Well, we speak in an unknown tongue.” The unknown tongue of 1st Corinthians 13 is the same tongue of Acts 2. It is not unknown in the sense that no man knows it. It is unknown in the sense that the speaker does not know it. The original Greek makes it clear that it is an unlearned tongue. The common response is that I am wrong, and the unknown tongue is the tongue of angels. There is but one place where such a tongue is recorded in Scripture.
2nd Corinthians 12:2-4, “I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such a one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.”
The tongue of angels, the tongue of residents of the third heaven (the abode of angels; paradise), is not lawful for a man to speak. Examine again the claim that this is what is spoken. Either they are successful and criminals in God’s eyes, or they are fakes and frauds in the eyes of men and God. What passes for tongue speaking in pentecostalism is nothing more than an excited gibberish (it is not a language), that comes not from God, but from a self-induced euphoria.
Jesus died for his church, the bride of Christ. (Ephesians 5:25-33) Man throughout history has corrupted the church for which Christ died through denominationalism, by adding man-made laws to the scriptures, and by following creeds other than the Holy Bible.
It is possible today, to be obedient to the will of Christ. People can resolve to be restored the one church (Ephesians 4:4, Colossians 1:18) of the New Testament. (Acts 2:41-47).

• Add people to the church Acts 2:47, 1st Corinthians 12:18
• Give the church its doctrine Galatians 1:8-11, 2nd John 9-11
You should know, to enter the church, you must:
• Believe in Jesus Christ Hebrews 11:6, John 8:24, Acts 16:31
• Repent of your sins (Turn away from your sins) Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38, 3:19, 17:30

Gloria, each of these was invented, introduced, or popularized too late to be part of the faith delivered once for all (Jude 3). I realize this has been extremely long for an answer. I have other information for you. Nevertheless, I will give it to you from sources on the web. Please examine each of these as you have time and ability. I pray you have a profitable study with these materials. I pray you have great success in getting your family out of the idolatrous imposter which is catholicism. Moreover, I pray for you that you would leave the imposter that is “full Gospel” pentecostalism. I pray that all of you would learn the truth and be added to Christ’s church.
