Critics of Catholicism/Catholicism and the Mexican culture

Question
This may be out of your research.. I'm not sure, but if you know anything about the ways the Mexican culture, whether it be 500 years ago with the Spanish conquest or present today, I'd like to know how Catholicism has oppressed the culture in any way. Like issues with birth control, education, domestic violence, marriage or language.

Answer
It is indeed not a subject that I have researched - so I cannot reply to this claim/presumption specifically.

I have, though, read at least the cursory histories of the Church in many parts of our world, and can tell you honestly that I have never heard of this opinion as the one held by any group in general.

...and if I may, I'll add this advice:  When and if you find someone making this claim (that Catholocism has oppressed the mexican people) that you 1. examine their motives, and 2. Look for the "other side of the story".

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the position of "the Catholic Church has oppressed the Mexicans" is held by many people who are truly knowledgable of the history of the Catholic Church in Mexico.

I'm not one to ignore facts whether they be positive or negative toward the Catholic Church, but quite honestly, I have not heard of this line of thought before.

Peace and Blessings, Erykah.

Rick.

I can help clarify fact vs. fiction regarding the teachings of the Catholic Faith. I believe that Catholicism is the best representation of the Historic Christian Faith and that this can be shown with Scripture, reason and history.

I am an ecumenical apologist. I'm not interested in telling non-Catholics why they are wrong, but am happy to explain and confirm what we believe and why we; from Scripture, reason and history.

There are some issues where I will have to politely agree to disagree with my non-Catholic brother in Christ, however there is so much that we share in common, I'd prefer to clarify those first. :)

As a former Protestant (Church of the Nazarene) I came to the faith by recognizing, after lengthy study, that Catholocism is the best representation of the Historic Christian Faith. Very interested in "ecumenical apologetics", and have started a website pursuing it: www.catholictruths.com
