Question Hi there -
I'm thinking of going to Croatia for the summer, and as I DJ soul music, I wanted to know something about how it is received there - I'd like to take records and work out there. By soul music I mean 60's and 70's soul and funk, generally speaking; all the websites I've found rave(!) about the electronic music scene, or talk of the classical concerts, or inform about the folk music. None of this is particullarly relevant to me...
It's a tricky question, I know, but I guess I'm asking which would be the most cosmopolitan cities, those with a varied nightlife. And if you know anything about people specifically not liking soul music, or whether (in your view) it's overlooked out there. I mean, I know how enjoyable the music is - I guess I want to know if Croatian's would disagree....
Thanks for any help you can offer -
Martin
Answer Hi Martin,
To start off, I will answer the questions that I do know. You asked what the most cosmopolitan cities are, and those would definitely be the two largest cities - Zagreb and Split. I honestly don't know if Croatians really like 60's and 70's soul music, but I can tell you that whenever the "discos" (as the Croatians call them) have Studio 54 nights, it's completely packed. So I do know that they like 70's music, but I'm not sure if it's really soul music. And yes, it is true, Croatians are definitely most fond of the techno, electronic music. But there are also several eclectic crowds that like rock, disco music, etc. If it were me, the best thing would be to bring along your CDs and try a gig at a club one night and see what the turnout is like. Because honestly, you can ask me and I will tell you that techno music is the most favored.. but you can also ask someone else who is Croatian and they could possibly tell you that soul music might be favored in some parts. There's no real way of knowing unless you actually try it out.
I hope I somewhat helped you out. If you have any other questions or anything, please feel free to let me know :)
