---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I would like to attach them to one another. I have about 130 approx 4" X 4" squares with finished edges. The material is somewhat like heavy T-shirt material. I want to put them together to make a larger square to use as a "throw".

Answer
Ok!  If your using yarn, you'll probably have to pre-punch holes with a fabric punch. If you're using crochet thread and a small steel hook, the hook may do the hole punching for you. Hold 2 of the squares, with the wrong (backs)sides together. Make a loop in your thread, holding it with one hand,(leave a "tail" about 2 inches long) stick your hook into the 2 corner holes of the squares, and pull the loop through, holding onto the thread. Now you have a loop on your hook, and 2 pieces of thread in the fingers of your other hand. You'll now be  working on top of the seam between the squares. Stick your needle in the next holes of the squares, grab both pieces of thread, and pull through, making sure the stitches stay on top of the seam. Don't pull it too tight, or your squares can't lie flat!
The object here, at the beginning, is to work over the tail, to hold it securely. If you like, you can tie a small knot instead. Now, just continue with your slip stitches (hook through the holes, grab the thread & pull it through) until you have enough squares joined for the required length. The sl st looks a bit like chicken tracks! I know this is a bit complicated, but just at the beginning!
If you need more help, just E me, and I try to help!

Expertise

I consider myself an expert in the field of hand crochet. I have been crocheting for 45 years. I can answer most question on the differnt stitches, as well as the methods used to create speciality items. The art of crochet, after 2 decades of being out of fashion, is enjoying a modest come back. I want to help those newcomers looking for a little/lot of help to get started. Once they are comfortable with the process, they can relax & begin to create the heirlooms of tomorrow.
