Question
I am very new at crocheting.  Although I am quite slow, I am having fun.  However I do not know what to do with the trailing yarn left at the beginning from making the initial chain, and would also like to know how to change colors.  I cannot find an easy to use site online that explains either of these (probably basic) necessities!

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hey, Erica!  The tail at the beginning chain can be worked back into the beginning chain once you get another row on.
Just use your hook, and weave it back and forth through the chain stitches, and snip off any excess if it's to short to reach the next stitch.  As to changing colors, pull up a loop of the old (current) color, so that there are 2 loops on the hook, then pull the new color through those loops, pull it snug, cut the old color about an inch long, lay it on top of your row, and crochet over it.
Hope this helps!
Best,  Bea

Expertise

I consider myself an expert in the field of hand crochet. I have been crocheting for 45 years. I can answer most question on the differnt stitches, as well as the methods used to create speciality items. The art of crochet, after 2 decades of being out of fashion, is enjoying a modest come back. I want to help those newcomers looking for a little/lot of help to get started. Once they are comfortable with the process, they can relax & begin to create the heirlooms of tomorrow.
