Question
I am having troubles understanding this pattern.
2nd row: Ch5 4 dc in 3rd ch from hook.
*(1 sc. Ch2. 4 dc) in next ch-2 sp.
Rep from * to turning ch. 1 sc in top of turning ch.

Chain 5. Place 4 double crochets in the 3rd chain from the hook. and then i'm lost.


Answer
*an asterisk means to repeat everything that follows it until you see another asterisk.  In this case, you repeat *(1 sc. Ch2. 4 dc) in next ch-2 sp. until you get to the turning chain at the end of the row.
( ) parentheses says to treat everything within them as a group.  
So you are going to put 1 sc, ch 2, then 4 dc all in the next chain 2 space.  There's no further instructions, so you repeat that - 1 sc, ch 2, then 4 dc all in the next chain 2 space, then repeat that.  So you are putting 1sc, ch2, 4dc in each chain 2 space till you get to the turning chain.  After the second asterisk, you have the instruction to put 1 single in the top of the turning chain.
