Question
I am trying to make a granny square blanket from a pattern i got in a booklet. i have done many granny squares before but this one is different. the rose in the center is 3D. the directions say [sc in ring, ch 5] 8 times - 8 ch-5 loops. I get that I single crochet then chain 5 then single crochet in the loop and I do that 8 times but I don't know what 8 ch-5 loops means

Answer
"but I don't know what 8 ch-5 loops means"

That's called a "row count".  It's a short explanation of what stitches, and how many of them you will have at the end of the row.  So it's just telling you that when you finish this round you will have a total of 8 loops that are each made of chain 5.

In a simple pattern, it seems unnecessary.  However, if you get a very complicated pattern, it's very helpful to have this "recap" so you can double check your work before you find out that you've made a mistake and have to rip back a lot of work.
