Question
QUESTION: I am trying to make a round wreath rug, it is fine until I work even on the rounds then it starts to "bowl up" in the center. What can I do to avoid that? Thank you

ANSWER: It sounds like you are not increasing your rounds.  If your wreath is made with doubles all around (for example), then make 2 doubles in one stitch instead of just one.  Do this evenly all the way around and you will see your piece start to flattn out.  Look in a book or online about "how to increase" for more information.
Let me know if this works for you.

QUESTION: The pattern I'm using calls for "work even" rows in addtion to the increases, that's where it starts to "bowl up." As long as I put the increases in it's fine. Is there any way to do this and still have it lay flat?

Answer
I've had patterns do that too, like when making hats.  I just increase where I feel I need to. I think a lot of it has to do with your yarn, or your tension.  Also, I find that vintage books often have mistakes.  I'm working with a book from the 40's right now and I've had to readjust several things.

Expertise

Traditional Crochet and Filet Crochet (not clothes) I do more thread crochet than yarn.

Experience

I have been crocheting for over 50 years. As a child growing up in New Orleans, LA, I had aunts and older cousins who taught me, but now they are all gone and sadly, there is no one who crochets in my area. I hope to be able to meet fellow crocheters through this website, and I'd be delighted if I could help someone answer a question. I'm sure I'll be asking my share, also. I specifically enjoy doilies and afghans. I really like designing filet crochet. I don't make clothes, other than hats and scarves.

Education/Credentials
I learned as a child in the 50's from aunts and older cousins.
