Question
Is there a formula to determine how many foundation chains you need for a certain size afghan?  Sometimes I find a pattern for an large on and want to make it lapghan size or the reverse.  I usually take what the pattern gives me an multipy or divide but when there are repeats that doesn't always work out.

Answer
Hi, Sue!  So far as I know, there isn't a formula. I just crochet a chain the width I want, subtract the number of chains I make, from what the pattern calls for, and adjust your stitches accordingly.
Just make sure that you keep the number of chains either odd or even to match the pattern.

Expertise

I consider myself an expert in the field of hand crochet. I have been crocheting for 45 years. I can answer most question on the differnt stitches, as well as the methods used to create speciality items. The art of crochet, after 2 decades of being out of fashion, is enjoying a modest come back. I want to help those newcomers looking for a little/lot of help to get started. Once they are comfortable with the process, they can relax & begin to create the heirlooms of tomorrow.
