Crochet/removing age yellowing from crocheted items

Question
My grandmother left me an heirloom double bed spread she made from
ordinary cream colored crochet thread.  It has yellowed evenly all over, and as
far as I know there are no spots or stains in the usual sense. It has however,
yellowed with age.  For a while we stored it in a plastic bag which may have
contributed to the aging.  Do you recommend (1) not trying to whiten it (2)
hand washing it in a particular bleach solution or (3)  pinning it to a foam
core board (lined with was paper) and spaying some bleach solution on it?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hey, Lyn! Lucky you, to own such a treasure! All you need do, is soak it in warm water & some oxy clean, swish it around a bit, rinse in cold water, and use big heavy towels to wring it dry. If you could hang it on a clothes line to dry in the sun, that would be perfect!

Expertise

I consider myself an expert in the field of hand crochet. I have been crocheting for 45 years. I can answer most question on the differnt stitches, as well as the methods used to create speciality items. The art of crochet, after 2 decades of being out of fashion, is enjoying a modest come back. I want to help those newcomers looking for a little/lot of help to get started. Once they are comfortable with the process, they can relax & begin to create the heirlooms of tomorrow.
