Question
hope you help me. I am making a halter top. The first 10 1/2 inches of the pattern have been 5 dc's ( to form a shell) then a sc.

The next part is to "Shape Top". Sl st in each of the first 3 dc. Sl st in the next sc. Sl st in each of the next 3 dc. Ch 1. 1 sc in the same dc as last sl st. Pat to last 9 sts. Miss next 2 dc. 1 sc in next dc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.

I did all that. I t looked a little funny. I think it's decreasing? Now the next part has me a little hmmm...

"2nd Row"- Sl st in first sc. Sl st in each of next 3 dc. Ch 1. 1 Sc in same dc as last sl st. Pat to last shell. Miss next 2 dc. 1 sc in next dc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. Rep last row 5 times more. 7. shells.

I guess I'm having trouble accepting the fact that I need to do a stitch in a slip stitch. Is that right? Possible? How do I do that? And how do I tell what is a Dc, and what number it is when everything is squished together? I also don't understand why these two rows are in what appears to be the middle of the halter. So confused. I can send pictures if you need them. I hope you can help!
Thank you,
Caytlyn

Answer
If you look at what you wrote for the second row, you are doing a slip stitch in the first single crochet.  I have seen patterns that want you to slip stitch in the slip stitch.  The only way you would know for sure is to contact the author of the pattern.  It sounds as though the squished together part, that you call it, is the shaping around the bust since the rows are in the middle of the halter.  What you need to do when counting decreased areas is to count the stitches with your fingers or hook so you know where to place your next stitch.  Sometimes you just need to trust the pattern and finish it, then it will all make sense.
