Are your referring to the join itself, or the beginning chains which replace the first stitch?

To make the slip stitch join a little less noticable, you can take you hook out of the loop that it's in, insert the hook from back to front into the space that you're joining to, hook the loop that you dropped and pull it though the stitch that you're joining.  It makes the join a little smoother, but takes a little extra work.

To make the first stitch fit nicely with the next stitch, and eliminate that slight space, I will make my join into the first actual stitch instead of the top of the chain (like the ch 3 for the first double), then chain and make my next stitch of the pattern into the very same stitch instead of the next stitch.  You have to be very careful with your stitches and remember that you did this, keep an accurate stitch count, etc. but it will look nicer.

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
