AboutMarla Expertise I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in hairpin lace, or the afghan stitch. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
Experience I have been a crocheter for almost 30 years.
I saw you had crocheted an afghan with a lightning bolt pattern. I would so like to have a copy of this pattern, as my small nephew expressed a desire for one. Could you help me? Thank you
Cindy
Answer Hi Cindy!
Thanks for asking. I typed up the pattern a while ago, and did save it. Here it is:
This is the pattern as I know it. It is from “Crocheted Favorites & Originals of Jessie Abularach” Vol 4.
Note: I have typed the pattern as it is written. The colors shown are what are used in the pattern from her leaflet. Feel free to use whatever colors you like. Please let me know if you have any questions.
The instructions are for a 97” by 70” afghan. Use a G, H or I hook.
Materials: Three 4 oz 4-ply yarn in black (brown or desired colors). Eleven 4oz 4-ply yarns in assorted bright colors. No. G, H or I crochet hook.
Each row is worked separately. Do not turn work. End off at the end of each row. Leave 5” of yarn at beginning and end of every row for fringe. All sc are made in back loop of st. All dc are made in front loop of st in second row down from the one being worked. From row 4 on, you use a new color for each row.
Black: Chain 245 sts, fasten off, leaving 5” at both ends.
Row 1-3: Sc in each st across (work in back loops every row).
Now you start with the bright colors, changing color each row.
Row 4: Red - Sc across row.
Row 5: White - Sc across row.
Row 6: Black - Sc in 2 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 3 sc.
Row 7: Yellow - Sc in 3 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 2 sc.
Row 8: Lavender - Sc in 4 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 12 sc.
Row 9: Kelly Green - Sc in 5 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 11 sc.
Row 10: Brown - Sc in 6 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 10 sc.
Row 11: Orange - Sc in 7 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 9 sc.
Row 12: Purple - Sc in 8 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 8 sc.
Row 13: Pale Pink - Sc in 9 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 7 sc.
Row 14: Avocado Green - Sc in 10 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 6 sc.
Row 15: Red - Sc in 11 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 5 sc.
Row 16: Lilac - Sc in 12 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 4 sc.
Now, the “diagonal” that the bolts make start to go the other way.
Row 17: Black - Sc in 11 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 5 sc.
Row 18: Red - Sc in 10 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 6 sc.
Row 19: White - Sc in 9 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 7 sc.
Row 20: Black - Sc in 8 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 8 sc.
Row 21: Yellow - Sc in 7 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 9 sc.
Row 22: Lavender - Sc in 6 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 10 sc.
Row 23: Kelly Green - Sc in 5 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 11 sc.
Row 24: Brown - Sc in 4 sts * 1 dc, 10 sc * repeat between * end 12 sc.
Row 25: Orange - Repeat row 7.
Row 26: Purple - Repeat row 6.
Row 27: Pale Pink - Repeat row 16.
Row 28: Avocado Green - Repeat row 15.
Row 29: Red - Repeat row 18.
Row 30: Lilac - Repeat row 19.
Row 31: Black - Repeat row 18.
Row 32: Red - Repeat row 17.
Row 33: White - Repeat row 16
Now repeat from row 6 to 33 (7 or 8 times) for desired length.
