AboutMarla Expertise I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in hairpin lace, or the afghan stitch. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
Experience I have been a crocheter for almost 30 years.
Question Hi! I read that you are an expert at doily/thread crocheting. Well, I am working on a thread chrocheted bonnet for my 4 month old. The directions are a little confusing. After much frustration I finally realized that the directions were European instructions so my sc was their dc! LOL. Anyways, the one particular direction i'm having trouble with is:
TR in each TR, always widening sufficiently to keep the circle flat and smooth by working 2 TR in 1 TR. The widening should be done at intervals. The 15th row/round should have 160 TR.
The part that I am particularly having problems with is "widening sufficiently to keep the circle flat and smooth by working 2 TR in 1 TR. The widening should be done at intervals". ANY HELP at all would be really appreciated. The instructions said that you wouldn't be able to search online. But if you're interested, the URL is http://www.antiquecrochetpatterns.com/baby-bonnet.html.
Answer Hi Sara!
Thanks for asking. Yes the European crochet is different I forgot about that. I would NOT recommend using a dark thread for a marker if you are using a light thread for crocheting. The thread may “bleed”, or filaments from the dark thread may be left behind. It happened to me once, and it looked awful so I don’t do that anymore. Use a light thread, or even a piece of the same thread. If the thread is long enough, you can still see the place where it marks, Now about the instructions. “Widening sufficiently” I would assume means to increase the number of stitches in each round gradually through rnd 15 where you will end up with 160 rounds. It looks like in most rounds you will be increasing 16 sts in each round. This is how I tracked the rounds. At the end of the 2nd rnd you should have 16 sts. At the end of the 3rd row you should have 24 st. At the end of rnd 4 you should have 32 st. if you increase in this round (I think it would be best if you did) Rnd 5 should have 40 st. Rnd 6 is worked even. This is what I came up with for the next. I hope it works well for you.The first few rounds you will increase each rnd by 8 st. I converted it to OUR form of dc.
Rnd 7: Ch 3(counts as 1st dc.) dc in 3 st, 2dc in next st. *Dc in 4st, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from*. Join to 3rd ch of 1st ch 3 (48 st).
Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in next 4dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from *. Join (56)
Rnd 9: Ch 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2dc in next dc. *Dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from*. Join (64)
Now you will increase each rnd by 16 st.
Rnd 10: Ch 3, dc in 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. (80).
Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc Repeat from* around. Join. (96).
Rnd 12: Ch 3, dc in 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from* around. Join (112)
Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. (128)
Rnd 14: Ch 3, dc in 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 7dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from* around. Join. (144).
Rnd 15: Ch 3, dc in 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc. *Dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from* around. Join. (160).
I hope this helps, and doesn’t confuse you. The crochet “circle” may not be completely flat, but then it is a bonnet for a baby’s head. Let me know if. You need anything else, or are having trouble with this. Good luck with the bonnet. It looks like it will be very pretty.
