Question
I am crocheting a hat and there is this term that I a little confused about.  When it says to chain 2, then do 2 half double crochet in next chain space?  What does "next chain space mean?  I look forward to the answer.

Answer
Hi Sylvia!

Thanks for asking! In the previous round, somewhere you made a stitch, then made one or more chain stitches, then made another stitch. This may or may not been done all in one stitch or place. The chain stitch or chain stitches you made are usually called a chain space, even if it is only one chain stitch. That is where it can be confusing, since in crochet,a“chain space” doesn’t always mean a big space. So "next chain space" means that you crochet in that very next chain space after the stitch you just made in your current round. I hope this has helped. Good luck on you hat! Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.

I have been a crocheter for over 30 years.
