About Marla
Expertise
I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in hairpin lace, or the afghan stitch. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.

Experience
I have been a crocheter for almost 30 years.

Crochet - afghan stitch

Question
I want to make a blanket from a graph with the afghan stitch. The only problem is, the blanket is 150 to 200 stitches wide. How do people do that. I know with the afghan stitch all the stitches first have to be on the needle. So how are all these people making these very nice blankets of cartoon characters with the afghan stitch. Are they doing it a section at a time, just putting like 30 stitches on their hook at a time. If they are, then whats the best way to connect all the sections. How are they doing this. When I look at the pictures, it looks like their making the blanket all at once without doing it in sections.

Answer
Hi!
Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, I have done very little with the afghan hook, even though I think I have a complete set. So I can’t be of much help. But I went to one website that shows an elongated hook much like the elongated knitting needles. They call it the “swivel hook”. The website is:
http://cassandra011.tripod.com/cassandrascrochetcorner/id26.html. they don't sell them, but it show an afghan made with one.
Another website I went to was:
http://www.crochet-knit.com.  Then click on “crochet hooks”, then “afghan hooks.
Some websites call it a “flexible afghan hook, so if you search using “flexible afghan crochet hook" you can find places that sell them. If you have a craft store in your area, they may carry them too.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your project!

Marla
