Is there a formula for figuring how much fabric is needed when crocheting rag rugs. I want to make a rug with 2 colors 2'x6' and don't know how much i will need of each color to make each color rows even amounts.

Thanks for asking! I’m sorry, but I’m not aware of any formula. However, I have a leaflet for “Annie’s Attic”, using fabric strips or multiple strands of yarn. The name of the leaflet is called “Quick & Easy With a Q Hook. Casserole Carriers”. Although the patterns are not for rugs, it does give an equivalence between fabric strips and yarn. It says that 8 strands of 4-ply worsted weight yarn is equivalent to a 2 1/2" fabric strip. If you have yarn, perhaps you could crochet a few rows with the 8 strands and get a guideline for the amount before buying the material. This may get messy, though, when you unravel the yarn.
Another option would to try to find a pattern on the Internet, or in a craft book to see how much yardage is used for a pattern then calculate how much you would use for yours.
