Question
I bought some yarn at Hobby Lobby with a free pattern included. It says to ch 20 the next step says Row 1= (RS) Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2,turn,20 dc
I have started this three times now and I can't figure out how to come up with 20 dc if I use 4 ch for the first dc. I think that the pattern may be wrong. Does this mean that I should have a total of 20 stitches after I complete #1?

Answer
Hi Michelle!
Thanks for asking. You are right, something is wrong. If you ch 20 like it said, you should have 18 dc, because the tuning chain counts as a dc. There must be a typo somewhere. They either mean either 18 dc for this row, or to chain 22 instead of 20,(which would make it 20 dc). You may need to check the next row to see how many stitches are in that row and see if that row makes any sense with what the beginning instructions say. Hopefully the instructions will say how many stitches you should have at the end of each row. Good luck! Let me know how it goes, and if you need anything else.

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
