About Marla
Expertise
I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in hairpin lace, or the afghan stitch. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.

Experience
I have been a crocheter for almost 30 years.

Crochet - changing yarn in a crochet pattern

Expert: Marla - 6/6/2009

Question
Hi I have a favorite crochet afgan pattern I would like to change from traditional 3-4ply yarn to a sport or baby weight I need to figure out how much yarn to buy for a mile a minute rainbow pattern if that helps.  It should work out to be approx 2 3/4 ft by 3 1/2 ft or a little larger any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Debby!
Thanks for asking! I am afraid I can only give you an estimate. I found a baby afghan mile a minute pattern, which probably may not be the same pattern as yours. It is from Leisure Arts Leaflet # 2774. It is for an afghan 31 by 41 inches. It is for 15 strips. The inner strips calls for  a total of 20.5 ounces and  for the outer strip, 6.75 ounces. So for this one, you need around 28 ounces. To get a better estimate, you could look in your craft store to see if it has a baby afghan in a mile a minute pattern similar to yours, or even go online to find a pattern that has the amount needed. My motto is: When in doubt, buy lots of yarn. Most craft stores will let you return unused skeins. But I don’t ever get around to doing this, which is one reason I have hundreds of skeins of yarns. But check first about this policy before buying. Sorry I can't be of more help. good luck!
