AboutMarla Expertise I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in hairpin lace, or the afghan stitch. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
Experience I have been a crocheter for almost 30 years.
Question I've seen patterns for circular baby afghan that look like some of the doily patterns usually done in crochet thread. Could I use one of the doily patterns, substitute baby/sport yarn, adjusting the hook accordingly, and come out with an afghan? Or would there be more adjusting I'd have to do?
Answer Hi Susan!
Thanks for asking! I have seen those afghans, too, and think they are very pretty. It is possible that they used doily patterns themselves. I think it could be done. Other than the hook size, I really don’t think there would be much of a need for adjusting. But it is possible that you may need to block more than with other aghans since it will be circular. Once I used 4-ply yarn and crocheted using a doily pattern, and didn’t need to adjust. It turned out a lot bigger than I thought it would. So I would suggest you practice with a swatch and crochet several rounds to get your gauge so that you know how big it would get. Another thing to consider, too, is if you use a lot of chain stitches, like for a pineapple pattern, will the spaces be too large so that little fingers will get caught in them? I think a tighter stitched doily would turn out very nice. Anyway, I think you are very creative to do this. Good luck! I know it will turn out very pretty.
