Crochet/Hat is becoming wavy

QuestionI was taught to crochet years ago by an elderly woman but I have never learned how to read a pattern or make adjustments when needed. I am making a hat following a video on U-tube. The pattern for rows 2 thru 4 is 1 double stitch then 2 double in the same hole. That worked fine and laid flat like instructed on video. Row 5 changes to 2 separate double stitches and 2 doubles in same hole 2 double stitch in same whole. This where my hat becomes wavy and won't lay flat.
I just read the following: The ch 3 counts as the first dc. So if you were just using dc rows in an afghan, the very first stitch that you come to that looks like you should put a hook in, you skip, since that is considered the first stitch which is that ch 3 turning chain. Then at the end you dc in that last stitch, which is part of the turning chain.
The video I am following stresses at the beginning of each row to make sure you put your needle in the very first whole under your stitch. Could I be adding an extra stitch in error?
My mother is taking Chemo and I would Love to get this hat completed for her for Christmas. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
AnswerYes, it is possible you are adding an extra stitch on each row. This will only cause a slight difference at first, but after a few rows, can be quite a problem. Go back two or three rows, and make sure you use one less stitch. If that doesn't help, let me know.
