Question

What it should look li
"So I am making a blanket called "Baby Bumps". I've done a successful chain of 144. I've also completed Row 1 & 2. Row 3 reads..."Row 3: Ch 1, sc in every dc, ch-1 space and bobble across, sc in top of ch-3; turn."

I don't have a "dc to sc" in.

I attempted to continue with what I thought it was but my pattern ended up looking more checkered whereas there's did not. Please HELP!! I'll post the intro instructions if that'll help.

With A, ch 144.
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 143 sc.
Row 2: Ch 3, skip first sc, * MB in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc; repeat from * to last 2 sc; MB in next sc, dc in last sc; turn."

Answer
Hi Jessica!
Thanks for asking. I found the pattern on the internet. I don’t think you are doing anything wrong. Once again, I think the author of the pattern thinks we are mind readers. It seems to imply there are a bunch of dc, doesn’t it? But I think the “every dc” refers to that one dc you make at the end on row 2.
Now as far as the “checkered look”: When you are using variegated yarn, the appearance depends on what color you started with, and where at in that particular colored section you started such as the very beginning of that color, the middle, or the end. By coincidence, you must have started at a point along a color that resulted in the “checkered” look. It looks like two “bumps” must be enough to use one of the variegated colors, and you must have started a bump at the start of a certain color, whereas the one in the picture didn’t. Their bumps look like they started somewhere in the middle of a color. Things like this have happened to me, also. Sometimes it gave a nice look, and other times I had to start over. My suggestion would be, if you don’t like the checkered look, to start with another skein and begin again. Don’t unravel the first one until you are sure you don’t want it.  But first check to see where in the color scheme of the first skein you started, and then start the beginning chains in a different spot, and then go from there. I hope this makes sense. And I hope I have helped you. Please let me know if I haven’t answered your questions right, or if you have anymore questions. Good luck with the blanket. It looks like a really nice one!

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
