Crochet/a chain of multiple sts

Question
I want to make a hooded scraf using the pattern called Catherine's Wheel.  I want the chain to be at least 274 sts.  The sample I saw says to chain a multiple of 10 stitches plus 1.  How many sts do I need to make to do a chain of 274 sts.  I wish I could understand this. Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Phyllis!
Thanks for asking. Yes, sometimes the "multiples of....." can be confusing. Now, I'm not really familiar with the “Catherine’s Wheel” but looking on the Internet it seems like it is a variation of the shell stitch. Is that right?  I couldn’t find the pattern itself, but only found some pictures. Anyway, what the “multiple of 10 stitches" means is that the pattern itself, or the repeating of the pattern takes 10 stitches. The “plus one” usually is for that extra stitch used in the turning chain. For example, if you were crocheting, say a square potholder using just single crochet, and wanted it to be 20 stitches wide then you would chain 21 stitches at the start. Now, if you want it to be at least 274 stitches, would 280 still be acceptable? That would only be 3 stitches on each end. If it is, then you would need to ch 281 stitches, which would be a multiple of 10 plus one (280 plus 1).

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I have or haven’t confused you, or if you need anything else. Good luck!

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
