Crochet/Use pattern for large afghan to make baby afghan

Question
Hello,  I have a really nice pattern for a Noah's Ark afghan, which measures 45" x 61."  I'd like to crochet it in baby size for my first grandchild.  I can figure out how to do the body of the afghan, but there are different animals and clouds, a rainbow, and even Noah and his wife around the outside border.  Is there a particular way to adapt the patterns for these appliques?  Thanks much, Janet

Answer
Hey, Janet! When you say appliques, do you mean crocheted appliques? If so they can be reduced to size, by using a steel hook and a size 10 crochet thread, instead of a yarn hook, and yarn. You'll probably have to try a few different sizes to find the correct scale, but it's an easy enough process. I would suggest a size 1 to start, as that's the next to largest size steel hook (size 0 is the largest). You should be able to tell if it works, after 3 or 4 rows/rnds. If the scale is too small, try a size 5 crochet thread, and the zero steel hook.

Hope this helps you.

Best,  Bea

I consider myself an expert in the field of hand crochet. I have been crocheting for 45 years. I can answer most question on the differnt stitches, as well as the methods used to create speciality items. The art of crochet, after 2 decades of being out of fashion, is enjoying a modest come back. I want to help those newcomers looking for a little/lot of help to get started. Once they are comfortable with the process, they can relax & begin to create the heirlooms of tomorrow.
