Question
QUESTION: I have a pattern for a baby poncho (size 12mths to 2 yrs)which is too small. Can you tell me how to make it for a 3 yr old. Here is the pattern link,  http://www.royalyarns.com//assets/images/free-crochet-patterns/baby/LT1431-TLC-F
If you can look it over and explain in a simple way I would appreciate it.

Thank You,
Annie

ANSWER: You should be able to add the difference again between the 12 mth size to the 2 yr size.

QUESTION: Are you saying I should double up on the stitches?  I'm don't understand what you mean when you say add the difference again.

Answer
sorry...I didn't look at the directions at first. There is no simple way to alter the pattern. It will be trial and error.

first you will need to use the gauge to determine what the final finished measurements of the original pattern is. Then you have to determine the measurements you want for the 3 year old. Then you compare the number of inches to increase, and use the gauge to determine the extra number of stitches needed for the beginning chain, all the way through to the ending row.

You may be able to use the pattern as is if you use a heavier weight yarn. It looks like they are using baby weight yarn. If you use worsted weight, and a larger hook; or use a worsted weight with a crochet thread weight and a larger hook, it may turn out to be the correct size.

Adjusting a pattern with one size fits all is difficult at best. Have the 3-year-old near, and keep trying it on them. Make it fun!
