Crochet/Fabric stiffner

Question
How can I remove fabric stiffener from a crochet project?  It didn't really work well when I applied it to a large crochet hat for hanging on the wall.  It also seems to have yellowed the white cotton thread

Answer
Hi Carrie!
Thanks for asking. I'm sorry, but I am not really sure how to remove stiffener. I'm not really familiar with that.  I'm not sure how permanent fabric stiffener is. My first thought would be to soak it in water to see if your hat will soften up, then hand wash it in water with a mild detergent. It is possible that the yellowing may be from the stiffener itself, and not the thread.  Perhaps you can find a better answer on the internet, or with another expert. There is a category for "Home/Garden", and under that, "Housework". You may be able to find your answer there.  I'm sorry I can't be of better help. Good luck

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
