Crochet/Afghan Borders

Question
I understand how to add borders to baby blankets, afghans, etc.  However, what I don't understand is how to determine what is a stitch while working on the sides of the rows.  They are not actually stitches, so where do you insert your needle?  Thanks!

Answer
If you use the sidebars/spaces of the side stitches, you can have a very nice border around the entire afghan. Just make sure you keep count of the number of stitches you put on the first side so you can make the same number on the opposite side.
