Question
QUESTION: I am working on a Cozy Sacque for Preemie from Crochet for Babies and I am stuck at the sleeves. I am fairly new at this and can't make heads or tails of it. The pattern begins with Hold piece with RS facing you and beg ch at top; make slip knot on hook and join with sc in 3rd ch of 1 ch-5 sp on row 5; sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next sc and so on... I get the so on portion but the beginning has me at a loss. This is my first attempt in making an article of clothing I have only crochet afghans before and never one with the ch- portion. Please help my baby is due any minute and i am super confused.

ANSWER: Yahaira:

Thanks for the question. I am sorry I responded late to this request.

So you will hold the piece by its Right Side (RS) facing you and the beginning chain for that panel at the top. You will do a Slip knot on hook, and join with single crochet in the third chain of the first chain 5 space on row 5. Single crochet in next 2 chains, 2 single crochet in next single crochet....

If I am correct, the part that is confusing you is the sc in 3rd ch of 1 ch-5sp on row 5.

You have some chain 5 spaces. This instructions is saying to join with a single crochet on the 3rd chain of that first 5 chain space you encounter. Its the number 1 that is confusing, it should just states first not a one.

I do hope that this helped. Congratulations on your new addition to your family.

Should you need any assistance, please let me know.

QUESTION: Hi Ed,
Thank you for your help. Yes that number 1 was confusing but I also don't
really understand the rest... I'm sorry it may be I'm too new at this. I
learned from older family and they taught me by looking at them not by
reading a pattern. I guess the part that I need to figure out is the (You
have some chain 5 spaces.) how do I know where to count these from?
(This instructions is saying to join with a single crochet on the 3rd chain of
that first 5 chain space you encounter.) see this is the part I don't know
where to count from. I know it must be obvious but I am lost. Sorry for this
confusion but you could shed some light I will be forever grateful.
Thanks,
Yahaira

Answer
Yahaira:

Thanks for the question.

You will count in the path that you are crocheting (I crochet right to left, so counting would start at the right side going left, so in other words, the 3rd chain from where the beginning chain five space begins.

Remember you are always going in one direction, and you would count going in the same direction.

Hope that helped you. Should you need any help. Please let me know
