Crochet/crochet thread
Expert: Patricia - 9/23/2010
QuestionHi, I have known how to crochet for many years but had not done it for a long time. I want to begin again. However I have never used anything really small like crochet thread. I have been entranced by the snowflake patterns and thought that I would try. I wanted to start in a larger size to begin and not be frustrated. I found some Red Heart size 3 100% cotton in my mom's stuff and thought that I would try that. 1st question: how do I get it off of the ball? Where do I begin using it? I have always had trouble with yarn too and this is way different than that. Also, what size hook should I use? and lst question (for this time hehe) Is there a way to remove rust from the thread or yarn safely? How about something that is partly done can the rust or yellowing be whitened? Sorry, too many questions, I know.
AnswerHi Ellen,
Your pattern should tell you what size hook to use but if you're not using the thread recommended, this chart will help you. For size 3 thread, use an E hook.
Snowflakes, coasters and small doilies are a good way to start. I usually use a Size 10 thread for this.
Here's a link that tells you what size hook to use.

Usually thread on ball unwinds from the outside like a spool of sewing thread. You might have to dig around for the end. I don't know what you mean by "where do I begin using it."
If the thread is white, I'd go ahead and crochet the snowflake and then soak it in a solution of bleach, detergent and water. Then, if possible, dry it in direct sunlight. I've had good luck with old pieces. There's not really anything you can do while it's still on the ball.
Good luck and please don't hesitate with more questions. I love to see someone coming back to the art!
