Question
QUESTION: The pattern reads:  ch 77, dc in fourth ch, ch 1 skip 1 ch, dc in nect, rep to last ch, turn--39 dc, 36 ch-1sps.  I got thru lst row, turned now i'm stuck, help

ANSWER: Hi Mary,
It looks like your pattern is having you make litte spaces. If your next row starts with single crochets (SC), it probably tells you to chain 1, then turn.  This sets you up for the next row. You will probably be crocheting into the spaces you made on the previous row. If you tell me the instructions for the next row, I can help you.

QUESTION: Row 2:  Ch3, dc in each de and ch-1 sp across, ending last dc in top of tch, turn -- 75 dc

Answer
Hi Mary,
That initial Ch3 will be your turning chain. (When they T-ch or tch, they are referring to the turning chain.) Since you will be making double crochets (DC) across that row, that Ch3 counts as a DC also.  Make a DC in the DC, then make a DC in that Ch 1 space, then a DC in the DC, then another DC in the next Ch 1 space - so on.    Row 2 will be a solid row of DC's.

Make sure to count each row to stay on track, or your piece will get wavy.  Remember that the turning chain (Ch3) counts as a double crochet.  Note that you have 75 double crochets which is the 39 DC and the 36 Ch 1 spaces from Row 1.

Let me know if you need more help.

Expertise

Traditional Crochet and Filet Crochet (not clothes) I do more thread crochet than yarn.

Experience

I have been crocheting for over 50 years. As a child growing up in New Orleans, LA, I had aunts and older cousins who taught me, but now they are all gone and sadly, there is no one who crochets in my area. I hope to be able to meet fellow crocheters through this website, and I'd be delighted if I could help someone answer a question. I'm sure I'll be asking my share, also. I specifically enjoy doilies and afghans. I really like designing filet crochet. I don't make clothes, other than hats and scarves.

Education/Credentials
I learned as a child in the 50's from aunts and older cousins.
