Crochet/Pattern question

Question
Hi,
I have a question about instructions in a pattern.  Fairly new to crochet and still working through deciphering some instructions.  The pattern reads: "Ch 170 Loosely.  Without twisting foundation ch, join with sl st to back of 1st ch".  It is the "back of first chain" part that is confusing.  Does "back" mean the other side of the v stitches, where I am used to putting the hook?  So the opposite side of the v's...back of the foundation chain?  This is very specific since there is another pattern where you do the same thing and join with a slip stitch in the first chain and nothing is mentioned about "back of 1st chain".

Appreciate you guidance.

Thanks,

Answer
Debbie:

Thanks for the question.

Yes, it means the back side of the V stitch, the small loop that is there. Of the rest of the stitches are also being done on the same location, then I thinks its for looks, so that the chain end looks like a chain and not like a loop. If the rest of the stitches are being done like normal, then it would not matter.

Hope that this helped. Should you need any assistance, please let me know.

Happy Hooking
