Answer
Hi Susan!
Thanks for asking! I went to the website, but alas! The pattern is no longer available. I went onto another website, and it said it was also from a “Crochet with Heart” magazine, which I have several issues of, but not that one.
You are probably doing it right, you maybe just haven’t done enough rows to give yourself credit. It looks like the colored rows are made up of dc and perhaps a “popcorn” stitch. Do the instructions say to crochet in the back loop in the colored row? It is a little difficult to tell from the picture, but when you crochet the white row after the colored row, it looks like you make a treble crochet in a stitch in the white row in front of and just below the colored row. This is what makes it look like blocks.
I’m sorry I can’t be of more help. If you send me the instructions for the rows through the white row after the colored row, I should be able to help you more. Please let me know and don’t underestimate yourself!

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.

I have been a crocheter for over 30 years.
