Question
Hi Marla,
I am also working on an afghan. I am not sure of the name of the pattern that I am using, its on the back of a Phentex yarn wrapper. I am on row 5 and its telling me too..1 sc in each of the first 4 sts.  *Working over ch-2 sp, work 1 sc in each of the next 2 free sc worked in A, 3 rows below.  1 sc in each of the next 10 sts.  Rep from * to last 6 sts.  Working over ch-2 sp. work 1 sc in each of the next 2 free sc worked in A, 3 rows below. 1 sc in each of the last 4 sts. Ch 1 turn..I got the 4 sc started but i don't know what Working over means..the pattern should end up with crocheted circles through out if i do it right...Thank you for any help

Answer
Hi Cyndi!
Thanks for asking! From the information you gave me, it looks like it means “in front”. So you fold the “ch-2” back a little to make the crocheting a little easier, and crochet in the designated row in front of the ch-2. It may seem a little awkward to do this, but you will do fine. Sometimes I have found that instructions aren’t always worded clearly. And I have said it before, sometimes the authors think we are mind readers and know exactly what they mean.
If this still doesn’t look right, then please send me the instructions for the first 4 rows so I can see what is exactly going on.
I hope this helps! Please let me know.

Expertise

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
