Question
Regarding Pattern: Best of Terry Kimbrough Baby Afghans- Exquiste (#10 on page 21)
I have no problem with the body of the afghan but when it comes to 'evenly divide 85 sc across the top and .... 115 down the sides!  Yikes!  I finally got the top figured out but the sides are a real problem. Having no reference as to how many actual rows are to be completed.. and just where and how many stitches go into which stitches/spaces, THAT is my problem. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Rebecca!
Thanks for waiting. My Internet crashed, and I just got it back.  I found the leaflet in a craft store and saw the pattern. You are right about not knowing how many rows there will be, and you probably won't until you finish. Generally a corner has three stitches in it.
When I do the edging using the sc stitch, I make one sc around the "post" (they sort of look like posts) of each sc, and two sc in each dc post. But that is when the number of stitches on the sides doesn't matter. In your case it does matter. What I would do, when finished is to fold the afghan in half, matching top to bottom, and put a marker where the fold is on each side. this gives you a reference point for half of the stitches. Then you could fold it again and put another marker in the fold. And repeat this until you have enough folds and markers to give you an idea as to how to space the stitches. The instructions say to repeat rnds 3-6, until it reaches that certain length (I'm sorry, I forgot to write the length down). So the number of rows would be a factor of 4, plus two extra rows (rows 1 and 2). If you have plenty of yarn, I wouldn't make that a strict size.
I hope I have mad myself clear on this. Let me know if you need further clarification, or more help. Good luck!

I have crocheted many doilies, I enjoy working with crochet thread. I have crocheted numerous afghans. But I have little to no experience in the afghan stitch, or hairpin lace. If you have a question pertaining to a pattern in a magazine, book or leaflet, please include the name and # of it, and the page or pattern #. There is a slight possibility I may have that pattern, and can refer to it. Nearly all of my crochet magazines, leaflests, etc are over 5 years old. Many are from the 80's and before. Although I have crocheted sweaters and slippers,I don't feel I have done enough of them to really give good advice as to assembling the pieces, but can give advice on the type of stitches.
