Well I have a plastic crochet hook that has an "8" embossed on it, and it's bigger around than the one I have that's marked an "N - 9MM".

A size 9 can be a 1.15mm OR a 5.5mm/I hook. It depends if you are working on lace (with thread) or an afghan/hat (or other YARN project).

If you only have G, H, I %26 J hooks, I am guessing that you are not working with thread, and therefore your I hook will be the one you need.

According to the chart that you quoted, a 9 is an I unless you are working with thread. I don't think she's working with thread, so she needs an I hook.
