Crohns Disease - Crohn's disease

Expert: Odette Yuhas - 7/6/2004

Question
My God-Daughter was just diagnosed a week ago with Crohn's disease. Could you please tell me; What is the percentage of people with Crohn's that eventually have an illeostomy or colostomy surgery?

Answer
Hi Kiki,

If we take care of ourselves the percentage of us who have to have illeostomys are very slight maybe 25%.  Surgery is a bit higher, but again, it depends if we take care of ourselves and take our medications.  Surgery is about 60%.

Odette
