Crohns Disease - Difference betweenCrohn's Disease and IBS

Expert: Odette Yuhas - 1/15/2005

Question
Hello,

Can you please explain to me what the difference is between Crohn's Disease and IBS? Based on my symptoms, I have been told both.

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

The difference with CD and IBS...

CD is a disease which is caused by a mutated gene called the nOD2.  It is an auto immune disease where our immune system goes out of whack & attacks our organs.  The intestines are the largest organs in our bodies and it starts there.  Without proper medications it can ansd will attack those other organs.  There is no cure and most of us have had surgery to remove intestines.

IBS is an irriated bowel symdrom. This is completely curable and all you have to do is watch what you eat and maybe some medications.

CD can cause death if not taken seriously!

If you think you may have cd, then you must be treated!  Some (and I repeat some) of the symptoms are loss of weight, extreme pain in the abdomen (you can't stand up), high fevers, blood in stools and countless others.  So, please get a good doctor to run tests!  The one god test is a CT scan.

Hope this helps you!
Odette
