Question
My doctor tell's me that I am having a flare up and also that I have a blockage. Please could you tell me what this means? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Emma,

What your doctor means is that (THE FLARE) is you have active abcesses.  What he/she means with the blockage is that the intestines are very swollen and that there is no way stuff can go through them.  It is very important that you do what the doctor says at this point because without meds and possible surgery, you could get into major trouble.  If you have an obstruction, and it is not taken care of, it could be deadly.  What could happen is that your intestines could rupture and the poison could go into your system.  It does not mean you have to have surgery, they may just put you into the hospital ans do something called a TPN.  All this is you go into the hospital and they feed you via an IV.  It will give your intestines time to rest because you are not eating solid foods which makes your intestines work hard to digest.  If that does not work, they may have to cut out the section of the intestines that are blocked.  Please don't think the worst, as I have had blockages (obstructions) several times and spent 2 days in the hospital and all came out okay.  Please be sure to check if you have blood in your stools..this is a danger sign.  Also, if you are running a fever.  Most of all, do what your doctor tells you.  And, if your doctor is not telling you that you should get something done, then get another doctor!  Blockages (also known as obstructions) are life threatening and can not just be "forgotten".  Please!!! And also, be sure to ask your doctor what questions you have.  If the doctor does not answer your question, that is a sign that the doctor is clueless and get another one!  I hope you are going to a specialist (GI doctor) and not just a reguar doctor as they do not have the knowledge a Gastro doctor has.

Please, if you need more info, I will do my best to help you out.  I am here to help if I can.

Odette
