Question
Hi,
I am starting new and would like to know the difference between cross stitch, embroidery and crewel.  Can you help me with this?

Answer
HI Laura,
I will try to explain the terms.

cross stitch

this can be counted or stamped. worked with floss.
counted: you work from a chart on a blank cloth,  The stitches form an "X".  Thus the name cross stitch.

crewel

This is a type of embroidery where you fill in spaces with different types of stitches.  Usually the pattern is stamped on the cloth.

Embroidery

This is a general term covering a variety of styles of decorative stitching.

hope this helps
