About Angela
Expertise
I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)

Cross Stitch - First time using linen

Expert: Angela - 4/5/2009

Question
I am cross-stitching a design on linen for the first time. The design is large and on 32 count linen. I've done a few cross-stitch designs but never on linen and I am struggling. The stitches do not look neat and I'm having a difficult time placing them and keeping them even. I'm thinking about changing to a 28-count cloth. Any suggestions for working with linen and about changing the pattern to 28 stitch. Thank you

Answer
Hello, Linda

Working on linen is a bit challenging, especially if you've never stitched on it before.  Here's a website that may help you with your project:

Yes, you can also change to a 28 count fabric, if you'd like.  Just remember to cut the fabric an extra 6" all around the design size to make sure that you have enough for framing.  For instance, if your design size is 6"x8", you'll need to cut the fabric 12"x14", and then simply begin stitching your design as you would if you were stitching on Aida.

NOTE:  Be sure to use Stop Fray (or similar) on the edges of the fabric... any fabric... before stitching so that your edges don't unravel as you're stitching.  I highly recommend this.

I hope that helps.  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Have a terrific Sunday!

Sincerely,

Angela :)
