About Angela
Expertise
I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)

Cross Stitch - Measuring fabric for cross stitch

Expert: Angela - 4/26/2009

Question
When it says a pattern is 67 x 59, Is that inches?  I am a beginner and really don't understand how to measure my projects so I know how much fabric I need.

Thank you.

Answer
Hello, Sharon

67x59 is in stitches.  This means that your project is approximately 6.7"x5.9".  There are approximately 10 stitches to 1".  Therefore, you will need to cut your fabric an extra 6" to accommodate your design.  I would recommend cutting your fabric 13"x12", which is rounding it up to an even number.

Also, before you begin stitching your project, I would highly recommend purchasing Stop Fray from either Hobby Lobby, or Michaels and use that on the edges of the fabric.  Be sure to put paper towel underneath the fabric before you apply this fabric glue as it'll ahere to anything.  Use a thin line along the edges of the fabric, so that you don't have globs of glue.  It'll dry in about a couple of hours.  Be sure to a tiny bit extra blue on the edges.

Also, I would recommend using a Q-Snap square hoop as it won't leave any marks on your project.  You can also purchase these at either Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

If you require any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me, and I'll be more than happy to help you. :)

Congratulations on starting cross stitching!  Good luck, and happy stitching. :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)
