About Angela
Expertise
I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)

Cross Stitch - 14 count aida cloth. How many floss threads to use?

Expert: Angela - 6/27/2009

Question
I Have purchased a cross-stitch pattern. The name is Ezmiralda's Brew. I have purchased 14 count orange aida cloth and the owner at Acadian Corner Shop told me to use 3 floss threads so you would not see the back stitching. Is this correct? I started the project and it looks a little thick, but the orginal project was stitched on 30 count orange hand dyed linen over 2 threads in the cloth. I did not see where it said how many floss threads to use. So I am having trouble converting to the 14 count aida cloth and figuring out how many floss threads to use. Just want to make sure. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello, Kathleen

You can use either 2 or 3 strands of floss.  If you don't want the fabric to show through the floss, then yes, I'd suggest you use 3.  You can always test on a small corner of the fabric, and just stitch a small square using 2 strands, and then stitch another square close to that one using 3 strands.

I normally stitch using 2 strands of floss, and that's on either an antique white, cream, or white fabric.

I hope that helps.  Good luck, and happy stitching!

Sincerely,

Angela :)
