Cross Stitch/Cross stitch materials

QuestionGood day,
How do I work out what size material I have? 14 count or 16
count? Then, I want to make a nice big Big 5, how big of a
picture do I need to make a rather big one? I have a DMC pc
pattern maker and just need to get the right size picture
AnswerHello, Annelie
You can create your pattern using Pattern Maker. If you want your picture to be very large, you'll need to choose the fabric count setting on your program.
If you decide to go with 14 count (which is a bit larger than 16 count), you can always stitch over 2 of the fabric threads to make it a 7 count fabric. Here's a website for you to learn how to stitch over 2 threads:

Just imagine that the fabric that they're showing is Aida instead of an evenweave fabric. It'll turn out the same, only larger. :)
Also, test a small area on the corner of the fabric by stitching a few rows using 3 strands or more of the floss. This will determine the amount of coverage you want. For instance, when I stitch on either 14 or 18 count Aida, I use 2 strands of floss, as I don't mind that the fabric shows through. The current project that I'm working on is being stitched with 3 strands of floss, and I'm stitching on 14 count. 3 strands covers the fabric better, which is needed for this current project.
You'll need to make sure that your fabric is cut with an extra 4-6" margin. For instance, if your design size is 5"x7", you'll need to cut the fabric at least 9"x11" (or larger.. Up to 11"x13" with a 6" margin). This will allow extra fabric for framing, etc.
I hope that helps you. If you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me. :)
Good luck, and happy stitching! :)
Sincerely,
Angela :)
